MITCHELL JOHNATHAN REED

BIRTH DATE 4/10/03, 8:37 A.M.

Mitchell Johnathan Reed: Melanie gave birth to Mitchell on Thursday, April 10, 2003 at 8:37 a.m.  Mitchell was 6 lbs, 5 ounces and 19 inches in length. The delivery did not go as planned in that there was no time for any epidural anesthesia but Melanie did fine. The story of how we ended up just making it into the Hospital door is that we were at the Hospital on Wednesday but Melanie was not far enough along so she was sent home.  We went out to dinner, walked around Costco and and went home.  Melanie made it through the night with some periods of contractions but nothing to made her go to the Hospital and her water did not break.  However, the Nurses emphasized that Melanie should not come back to the Hospital until her contractions were 5 minutes a part and she was having a good deal of contraction pain. Obviously, this advice is for first timers because it clearly was not the correct advice for Melanie.  Melanie never did have contractions that were less than 5 minutes apart and her contraction pain was not enough to make her go to the hospital.  Melanie took a shower in the morning but was having some strong contractions about every 7 minutes.  We dropped Marcus off at his school at 7:30 a.m. and arrived at the Hospital at a quarter to eight. Melanie felt like she had to push as soon as we got into the delivery room and the Nurses after examining Melanie started racing around the room and put Melanie on her side to try to stop the urge to push. The OB Doctor arrived in the next five to ten minutes and literally ran out of the house and raced to the hospital.  There was a discussion if we should try to wait for the Anesthesiologist but Melanie made it clear that she had to push.  Dr. Lawton suggested to Melanie that she should have the baby now and try to push.  Unfortunately, Dr. Lawton did not move out of the way in time and when Melanie gave a strong push, Melanie's water broke and almost covered Dr. Lawton. Everyone in the delivery room laughed including Dr. Lawton since she was the one who told Melanie to push.  The room was cleaned up and Dr. Lawton changed in the next couple of minutes before Melanie had another urge to push.  In about 25 minutes, with four major pushes, Mitchell was delivered. The labor pain according to Melanie was not bad except for the last two pushes before Mitchell was delivered.  Mitchell was healthy and was born with light brown hair.  During the first day, Mitchell continued to nurse well and appeared to be content.  Marcus was introduced to Mitchell after going to a Pizza Party for his T-ball team.  The baby gave Marcus a remote control car and Marcus seems fine being the big brother after months of talking about the new baby.  Mitchell came home on Saturday and continued to nurse like a champion.  Mitchell even slept for 5 hours his first night at home.

PROGRESS FROM 2 TO 3.5 YEARS: Marcus has natural athletic talents and to date has enjoyed soccer, basketball and T-ball with the other small kids.  Marcus is in pre-school at the Calvary Chapel Church in Yorba Linda for half-days.  Marcus and his Daddy have had fun building model rockets and flying or losing them as the case may be and playing with his different remote control cars and planes.
